The world is changing faster than the power grid can handle

The power grid is struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of change in the world. Gridoperators are working hard to expand and optimize their grid, but they are facing challenges due to a lack of skilled human resources and insufficient digitalization of substations and processes. To create great grids again, we need to redefine the substation.

The challenge is clear. Large scale adoption of renewable energy brings power grids to their limits. And even more renewable energy is a must to meet decarbonization goals and limit global warming.

So, grid expansion and better insight in the status of the grid are critical. A digital grid is a stronger grid. A software-defined grid is more flexible. Accelerate and become future proof by building digital software-defined substations.

Pace of grid expansions impeded by shortages in labor, materials and space

In such a situation, it is essential for system operators to adopt IEC 61850 compliant engineering processes and products to their full extent. This will support the increasing demand for cross-vendor interoperability, while reducing the total amount of materials needed by starting digitization as close as possible to the primary process.

Digitization at the source increases interoperability, flexibility, and results in better support for automated testing.

Volatile energy sources require real-time insight and operations to fully utilize the existing  grid

Optimizing grid utilization is the quickest and most convenient way to effectively increase grid capacity. Real time insight in energy flows and advanced (power quality) measurements provide the information needed for system operators to start exploiting hidden capacity.

Digitization of all primary process data and edge processing is the first step for system operators to utilize all available capacity in real-time.
